Student of the Month

January 2024:Bailey Au South Bay Stingrays

Bailey is a senior at Redondo Union High School currently a 4.1 GPA. As a solid defenseman, he first started playing hockey at age 4 through Toyota Sports Center, Kids First Hockey Program. He is currently playing for the South Bay Stingrays and has played for the Jr. Kings. At school he is in the Entrepreneur Club where he made videos on how to use CAD (computer aided design) programs; SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions); the National Chinese Honors Society and board member of the American Red Cross, where he is Basic Life Support certified and a CPR Trainer to teach CPR to high school seniors. With the Red Cross he has also volunteered at the 2023 and 2024 Rose Parade working at the First Aid Stations. Other activities are studying Japanese and practicing kendo, where he is 2-dan ranked. In the Fall, he hopes to continue to play hockey in Massachusetts where he will be attending college and studying Biomedical Engineering.

DECEMBER 2023: Lincoln Evans - El Segundo Strikers

Lincoln is the very epitome of a scholar athlete. As a Senior at Da Vinci Communications High School in El Segundo, Lincoln has maintained a 4.63 GPA while taking mostly Honors Courses. This year in addition to playing for the El Segundo Strikers Lincoln is President of the Human Rights Watch Student Task Force Chapter, a member of the Street Racing Kills Club as well as a member of the National Honor Society. In addition, he has also been a member of the Northrop Grumman High School Involvement Program since his Junior year where students learn about the company, their work and potential career opportunities. Lincoln believes community service is essential and so he volunteers at Code Ninja in El Segundo which is an educational organization specializing in teaching coding to kids. When at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in addition to playing for the El Segundo Strikers Lincoln serves as a volunteer coach for both 6U and 12U In-House Hockey Teams. Lincoln displays effort, tenacity, and passion in all his endeavors including on the Ice. He lives by and firmly believes in the saying "How you do the small things is how you do all things".

NOVEMBER 2023: EZRA CHAHINE-SANTA BARBARA ROYALS

As the student with the highest GPA on the team, Ezra consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to his studies, reflected in his outstanding academic performance. His unwavering focus, disciplined work ethic, and genuine enthusiasm for learning. We are proud to witness his dedication to achieving excellence in both academics and his passion for hockey. Ezra's ability to balance his commitments showcases not only his responsibility but also his determination to succeed in all aspects of his life. It's truly heartening to see him embrace education with such dedication.

October 2023: Teleios Zermeno-Santa Barbara Royals

Teleios currently has a 4.42 GPA and is enrolled in a heavy course load of 4 AP courses including both AP Statistics and AP Calculus along with both Art and engineering electives. Teleios is a top student at Providence, challenging himself whenever possible. He has taken nearly every honor or AP course that his school offers and has maintained A+'s across the board. He is on track to be in the running for class Valedictorian this year. He produces high-quality work and maintains strong relationships with his teachers, but more than that, he is one of the most likable students on his campus. He goes out of his way to serve others and is a caring student leader in the classroom, on his sports teams, and throughout campus.

September 2023: Daniel I - El Segundo Strikers

Daniel I, an outstanding senior-year student at Da Vinci Science with an impressive track record, unquestionably merits the Student of the Month accolade. Daniel embarked on his hockey journey at the tender age of 8, participating in esteemed hockey traveling clubs like the Jr. Kings, Ducks, and Ice Dogs, at the AA levels. Upon entering high school, he decided to broaden his horizons, diversifying his focus towards other sports and academic pursuits. Daniel's tenure at Borin Manufacturing in Electrical Engineering during his internship and his concurrent role as an Assistant Ice Hockey Coach showcase his ability to excel in both academic and athletic domains, firmly establishing a well-rounded skill set. Proficiency in CAD, CAM, CNC Mills and Router, 3-D Printing, Python, and JS serves as a testament to his technical acumen. Simultaneously, his enrollment in Chinese and Geology courses at El Camino College underscores an unwavering commitment to continuous learning.

February 2023: Larry Halvorson – Las Vegas Storm

Currently pushing towards straight As this quarter, Larry Halvorson looks to boost the 3.929 GPA he's earned so far as sophomore at Shadow Ridge High School. With a full schedule of honors classes, including French, Larry is also an accomplished musician. He plays piano and performs in his school's top auditioned choir. When he's not on the ice or working out, Larry stays busy playing disc golf, and performing with the Shadow Ridge Chamber Singers throughout the school and community. He also enjoys helping others and eagerly volunteers for his team's service projects.

January 2023: Brennen Meixner - Ventura County Poseidon

Brennen is a Senior at Foothill Technology High School where he is taking 3 AP classes as well as taking 3 classes at Ventura College, all while maintaining a 4.2 GPA. He is vice president of the Environment club and will soon be completing his Eagle rank in Scouts. Brennen began playing hockey at 4 years old and continues to love the sport. He has played for the Outlaws and Mariners and is currently playing as a winger for the VC Poseidon. Brennen will attend college in the fall studying Computer Science.

DECEMBER 2022: SATORU ETO - SOUTH BAY STINGRAYS

Satoru is a senior at Downtown Magnets High School and he has worked hard to earn a 3.92 unweighted GPA. He started playing travel hockey with the Bay Harbor Red Wings when he was 12 years old, and now at 17, he is thoroughly enjoying his last season of high school hockey as a Bay Harbor Stingray. Satoru also plays on the Ontario Empire 18U AA team and hopes to continue developing his game into his college years, although where that will be is still a mystery. During the summer months and whenever his schedule allows, Satoru works as a server at a restaurant in Little Tokyo and to relax, his favorite activity is to binge his favorite Anime.

November 2022: Jake Rodriguez - West Ranch Wildcats

Jake Rodriguez is a senior at Hart High School in Santa Clarita. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA for the past year and has a cumulative GPA of 3.67. Jake is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and is Treasurer of the FCA chapter at Hart.
Jake began playing hockey at the age of four when he first joined the Burbank Roller Kings. What he lacked in size compared to the older boys, he made up for in heart and commitment. He made the switch to ice hockey at the age of seven and began playing for the Valencia Jr Flyers. Jake has played for the Valencia Jr. Flyers as well as the California Heat and has now joined the West Ranch Wildcats. Jake had the honor of being chosen as Captain or Assistant Captain for three of those years.
Jake's love for hockey and his commitment to school is something to be proud of. As he wraps up his high school journey, Jake says that he is having the most fun he has ever had in hockey, this season, playing for West Ranch and Coach Dylan. He is excited to continue his education next year and was just recently accepted to his first-choice college, The Masters University. Way to go, Jake.

October 2022: Andre Pullen - Las Vegas Storm

Andre is a senior at Palo Verde High School. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA where he is taking multiple AP and Honors courses. Andre is able to balance playing hockey at the Varsity level, and working at the Las Vegas Ice Center, all while being a prestigious student. His work ethic and relentless attitude all contribute to his success both on the rink and in the classroom collectively. During his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his teammates and watching college football. His goals for the year are to win the LAKHSHL and a state championship while securing his enrollment to an elite university.



SEPTEMBER 2021 - Ace Keenan - South Bay Stingrays

Ace is at the top of the LAKHSHL leader board, he has been recently nominated at his high school (South High in Torrance) to the Homecoming Court for his high school service while juggling 2 AP classes, high school varsity wrestling (4 years), and varsity ice hockey on the South Bay Stingrays (3 years). His current GPA is 3.7. Great work Ace!

OCTOBER 2021 - Jayden Beery - Las Vegas Storm

Jayden is a sophomore at Doral Academy Red Rock. He currently holds a 3.857 GPA and is enrolled in 2 accelerated courses. After graduation he would like to enroll at Denver University or Arizona State University. Jayden just completed the USA hockey referee training program and will begin working in our youth hockey community. Jayden’s strong work ethic allows for him to be always successful on and off the ice.

NOVEMBER 2021 - Bryson Hall - Santa Barbara Royals

Bryson Hall is a Junior at Santa Barbara High School. He currently holds a 3.878 GPA and is enrolled in one course at Santa Barbara City College. He always works hard at hockey practice and loves the game. Besides playing hockey, he loves surfing and does so at least 4-5 times per week.

DECEMBER 2021 - Johnny Gabbey - East County Outlaws

Johnny is seventeen years old and lives in Westlake Village, CA with his twin sister Mia and his parents Brooke and John. He attends Oak Park High School. His favorite subjects are History and Psychology. He is a member of the National Honor Society and gets straight A's. He takes flying lessons and hopes to become a pilot someday. Johnny plays varsity tennis for OPHS and he works at Westlake Athletic Club as a tennis assistant pro.  Johnny's favorite sport is hockey. He was introduced to hockey by his dad who played high school hockey for Canisius in Buffalo, and his grandpa who played club hockey for OSU back in the sixties. Johnny started playing hockey when he was five years old at Simi Valley Iceoplex. In 2019 he went to the CAHA State Championships with the 14B Ventura Mariners. He currently plays at the Iceoplex for the LA Kings High School East Valley Outlaws. Johnny is a huge LA Kings fan!

JANUARY 2021 - Nick Romeo - West Ranch Wildcats

Nick has been a member of the West Ranch hockey club for 4 years, playing 3 years on the varsity team. Nick was named as an alternate Captain this year. Nick had a late start in hockey. His desire to play and learn the game came at 10 years old when he attended his first L.A. Kings hockey game. Nick is a Senior at Golden Valley High School where he has a 4.2 GPA. He is carrying 4 AP classes and is a member of the National Honor Society. Nick has a passion for flying. He is president of his school's aviation club and is Flight Commander for the Air Force JROTC unit. He received a full scholarship from the U.S. Air Force to attend flight school. Nick completed flight school in Florida this past summer and obtained his private pilot license. Nick credits hockey, and all his youth coaches, for instilling in him the discipline and passion to excel. Nick will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as an Aviation Science major.

FEBRUARY 2021 - NICK BOWMAN - Santa Barbara Royals

Nick Bowman is a senior at Santa Ynez High School.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains a 3.83 GPA. Nick has been enjoying playing hockey since he started playing inline at the age of six and shortly thereafter attended a Lil’ Kings ice hockey camp in El Segundo led by former NHL player Kyle Calder.  Nick’s skating career came full circle at the age of fifteen when he played for Coach Calder again, this time for his LA Jr Kings AAA team.

His love for the game far outweighs the sacrifice of living a great distance from any rink.  For his senior year Nick chose to play locally for the Greater Santa Barbara Royals which allows him to spend a little more time at home before going off to college.  During the summer Nick volunteered at Ice in Paradise helping young kids learn to skate.  Now he works part-time at the rink, often helping young children in the learn to skate programs.  After graduation Nick will attend Liberty University where he plans to continue playing hockey.
